Christine and Roger’s “other life” when not operating an AirBnB is running a Safety Consultancy - we are very concerned about you and yours not only enjoying Camp Ruffy, but SAFELY enjoying Camp Ruffy.

HOW WE MANAGE A NEARBY BUSH FIRE

It’s all in the preparation because it isn’t easy to put out a wild fire when it is running. Our region has many very active fire brigades and we maintain effective fire breaks on the property during the proclaimed fire season. We have a fire hose installed at each end of the house and a professionally installed fire suppression system on the house that is fed from our 110,000 litre tank. If we are not on site we monitor an approaching fire front firstly by observing the emergency services communications and our local ABC and secondly via streaming video to view the fire front proximity enabling a decision to turn on the fire suppression system at the appropriate time. Being off-grid means no water mains so we also have to preserve our water supply for when we really need it.

HOW YOU MONITOR A NEARBY BUSH FIRE

Select 97.7 FM - our local ABC radio station for all local bush fire information and consistent updates.

The VIC EMERGENCY APP will advise you of bushfires, floods, trees down and approaching potentially dangerous storms BUT only if you have it setup on your mobile device.

Download it now from the App Store or Google Play and select Ruffy and 20 kms for your Watch Zone.

Camp Ruffy enjoys an effective mobile phone coverage from the Telstra tower on Mount Wombat. This is why we ask organisers to supply us the phone numbers of all in their group. We may need to alert you to a fast approaching bushfire or to advise of a low battery charge requiring the generator to be started before the whole electrical system shuts down for a few hours to protect itself. With every phone # we are assured of a prompt receipt of a text or call by someone in your group.

The following photographs display the reason for our request for all in your group to be registered on our
GUEST REGISTER - bush fires really do happen.

This one travelled about 7 k’s from it’s source to us in about 15-20 minutes and wiped out half of the Camp Ruffy property in Dec 2014.

Please complete all the details for each guest on our EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUEST REGISTER.
